Equatorial Guinea triumph a ‘Cinderella story says coach Becker

Equatorial Guinea coach Esteban Becker described the host nation’s achievement in reaching the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations as a “Cinderella story” after they beat Gabon 2-0 on Sunday.

“It’s a Cinderella story, the poor team beating the rich team on merit, thanks to their sacrifice, their commitment, their pride and their passion,”

said the Argentine, whose side progressed from Group A as runners-up behind Congo Brazzaville with a win and two draws.

It is a remarkable story given that Becker himself was only appointed as coach at the start of this month.

“This squad only came together 20 days ago in Madrid, then we went to Lisbon and put in place a style of play with optimism.

“We were convinced in every training session that we could go far. To be in the top eight in Africa is an honour for such a small nation.”Equitorial

Former Real Madrid player Javier Balboa, whose penalty opened the scoring against the Gabonese, rejected opposition claims that he dived to win the spot-kick.

“I’m delighted for my country, my team and for myself. Today is a great day for the whole of Equatorial Guinea,” he said.

“The penalty was the right decision. I did not dive. Yes it changed the game but we scored two goals.”

Senegal’s Moussa Sow claims last-gasp win over Ghana in group opener • Ghana 1-2 Senegal • (A Ayew 14; Diouf 58, Sow 90)

Moussa Sow grabbed a dramatic late winner as Senegal opened their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2-1 win against Ghana in Group C.

André Ayew put Ghana in front from the penalty spot but Mame Biram Diouf grabbed the equaliser as Senegal heaped the pressure on after the interval.

Sow, a substitute, was on hand to win it with the last kick of the game and get his country off to a winning start in Equatorial Guinea.

Ghana had the better of the early stages without offering too much of a threat and needed a penalty to make their possession count in the 14th minute. Everton’s on-loan Chelsea winger Christian Atsu broke clear through the middle and was felled by Bouna Coundoul as he tried to go round the Senegal goalkeeper, who was booked for his troubles. André Ayew converted.

Senegal were struggling to make an impact but looked dangerous when they did get opportunities. Kara Mbodji’s header brought a save from Brimah Razak and Diouf did the same with a spectacular overhead kick just after the half-hour.

Senegal started the second half stronger and after Papakouli Diop had dragged a shot wide Diouf grabbed the leveller in the 58th minute. With Jordan Ayew off the field, the ball was launched into the Ghana box and Diouf headed against the post but showed superb awareness to get to the rebound and nod home.

The Stoke striker then had a glorious chance to put his side ahead but could only blaze over the bar after the ball reached him 12 yards out. Jordan Ayew fired a free-kick over the bar but Alain Giresse’s men continued to have the better of the closing stages and Dame N’Doye saw a header blocked in the box before Diop dragged a shot wide from the edge of the area when he should have done better.

The pressure eventually told with the last kick of the game as a long ball over the top found Sow, who played the ball to Henri Saivet. The Bordeaux striker then fed Diouf who slipped the ball back to Sow and his low finish sealed victory.

Pele: Brazil legend continues to improve in hospital

Brazil legend Pele has left intensive care as he continues to recover from a urinary infection.

The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital on 24 November.

A statement from the hospital said the 74-year-old “is doing well without medical complications”.

His kidney function will be assessed again on Wednesday but he is “lucid and eating well”, can walk around his room and is receiving “semi-intensive care”.

A World Cup winner in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was initially discharged from hospital on 13 November after surgery to remove kidney stones.

Widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, he scored a world-record 1,281 goals in 1,363 games during his 21-year career.

Capped 91 times by Brazil, scoring 77 goals, he was named Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000.

He made 14 appearances at World Cup finals, scoring 12 goals, and was awarded the Fifa Golden Ball as the best player at the 1970 tournament.

Midfielder adapting to life at Anfield and is confident Reds can improve their recent form

midfielderIt has been a “whirlwind” year for Adam Lallana, who led Southampton to a club-record eighth-placed finish in the Barclays Premier League as captain, went to the 2014 FIFA World Cup with England and joined Liverpool in the summer.

The 26-year-old midfielder admits it has been a difficult transition to Liverpool, having been based on the south coast all of his life, but he is confident that the Reds can improve their form after a difficult start to the season and is relishing the opportunity to play for a “huge, historic club.”

Speaking to NBC Sports in ‘Life of Lallana’, an interview in which he discussed his upbringing, different stages of his career and the new challenge at Anfield, he said: “Moving from the south coast to the north-west has been different.

“We’ve not been playing to our maximum but we are still in transition. We feel a really good performance is around the corner”
Adam Lallana

“My wife and I have never lived outside of south England. You take it for granted, having your family around you and friends. It’s been difficult. Our friends and family have been up to visit and the lads have been great helping us settle, so I can’t complain, really.

“I suppose last year was a bit of a whirlwind. I don’t really take much time to sit down and look back. But it has been enjoyable, put it that way. I’ve enjoyed the last 12 months.

“Like last season, I enjoyed a great season at Southampton, and I really enjoyed playing under Mauricio Pochettino.

“But things change. I got the opportunity to come to Liverpool, and it was something I couldn’t turn down, really. It was a chance to play Champions League football at a huge, historic club.”

After starting out at Bournemouth, Lallana moved along the south coast to Southampton at the age of 12 and broke into the first team in 2006. He helped them secure back-to-back promotions to the Barclays Premier League, before catching the eye of England manager Roy Hodgson as he adapted to England’s top flight seamlessly.

The new challenge at Anfield was hindered by injury problems at the start of the season, but Lallana has made six BPL appearances for Liverpool and scored his first goal for the Reds in a 2-1 league win over West Bromwich Albion.

“Joining a team like Liverpool is definitely an adaption phase. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. After losing Luis Suarez and missing Daniel Sturridge up top lately, it’s been difficult.

“But we’ve had to find different ways of winning games; other people have had to chip in with goals.

“We know we’ve not been playing to our maximum but we are still in transition. We feel that if we keep working hard, a really good performance is around the corner.

“My big aim for Liverpool this season is to settle in as well as I can to the group and contribute as much as possible to getting into the top four again. And hopefully win a bit of silverware.”

In the interview, Lallana also reflects on coming up against Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, his former team-mate at Southampton’s academy, the “brilliant” managerial expertise of Brendan Rodgers, his family’s Merseyside connections and his upbringing.

Mr Predictor November 15th ENG

International football is back this weekend as we take a break from the domestic leagues. The qualification process for Euro 2016 is reaching a crucial point, so which teams will continue to cruise and which ones will fall further behind?

Luxembourg vs Ukraine – Saturday 15th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

This game looks to be rather uneven, with Luxembourg bottom of the group on one point and Ukraine with six. If we look at the FIFA rankings it doesn’t look too good for Luxembourg either. They are rated 126th whilst Ukraine are up in 19th. Ukraine are also in good form. They have kept four cleansheets in their past five matches and have managed to win four of those. This will be too hard a challenge for Luxembourg and I can see a comfortable victory for the away side.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: Luxembourg 0 vs 2 Ukraine (Long List selection 5)

England vs Slovenia – Saturday 15th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

England are doing their best to forget an abysmal showing at the Brazil World Cup in this qualifying campaign, and so far they have three wins out of three. Since Brazil 2014, England have played four games, kept cleansheets in all of them and have scored nine along the way. Slovenia meanwhile are in second place behind England with six points. However their form is not so impressive. They have only found the net three times in their past five matches and have felt defeat in three of them. I think the pace and power that England have will see them win again, whilst their defence should stay tight for the fifth game in a row.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: England 2 vs 0 Slovenia (Long List selection 4)

Austria vs Russia – Saturday 15th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

This is a tough one to predict as both teams are so even. That is shown in the FIFA rankings, with Austria rated the 29th best team in the world and Russia the 30th. In the group, it’s first vs. second and on paper there’s not much to split them. The Austrians are in great form, winning three out of their past five and being unbeaten through the past eight. They haven’t conceded more than one goal in a game since Sweden put two past them in October 2013, so Russia have their work cut out. Fabio Capello’s men are unbeaten in their last five as well, but three of those were draws. A draw is a perfectly sensible bet in this one, but I just feel that Austria will come out on top.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: Austria 1 vs 0 Russia (Long List selection 1)

Spain vs Belarus – Saturday 15th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

The Spanish are still recovering from a very poor World Cup and have yet to convince they have put the dark days behind them in this campaign. They have managed to pick up two wins, but they suffered a shock defeat to Slovakia as well and they can’t seem to get the best out of Diego Costa, despite his dominance in the Premier League. Belarus are poor though and according to FIFA’s rankings they are 106th in the world. They played each other in World Cup qualifying and Spain won 2-1 and 4-0. I can see a big scoreline in this match.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: Spain 3 vs 0 Belarus (Long List selection 4)

Belgium vs Wales – Sunday 16th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

Belgium’s draw with Bosnia earlier in qualifying has left them playing catch-up, although they do still have a game in hand. They’ve been fairly solid at the back and with players like Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Divok Origi up top, they are always a threat going forward. Will Wales be concerned? They should be, but they should also be confident knowing they are the group leaders and in good form. I do like this Wales side, with Gareth Bale a moment of magic is never far away, but you have to say things could have worked out differently in the 2-1 wins over Andorra and Cyprus. Home advantage and a stronger squad depth will see Belgium record a victory.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: Belgium 2 vs 0 Wales (Long List selection 4)

Czech Republic vs Iceland – Sunday 16th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

Now this will be a very interesting game. Both teams have made the perfect start and boast three wins out of three. Iceland in particular have surprised as much as they have impressed, especially in their 2-0 victory over the Netherlands. Their attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson has been in fantastic form for club and country, scoring the two goals that sent the Netherlands crashing. They are also unbeaten in their last five games, but only one was away from home, so how will they perform here? I think it is very likely that these two will cancel each other out.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: Czech Republic 2 vs 2 Iceland (Long List selection 3)

Israel vs Bosnia-Herzegovina – Sunday 16th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

Israel will welcome Bosnia into this game with high spirits. They have won two games out of two, whilst their counterparts have only two points from three games. The FIFA rankings actually say Bosnia & Herzegovina are better than the Israelis and with the likes of Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic you can understand why. Whilst Israel have done well, this is by far their biggest test, having beaten the smaller nations Cyprus and Andorra. I feel that Bosnia will turn the corner in this game and will return home with their first win of the campaign.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: Israel 1 vs 2 Bosnia (Long List selection 2)

Italy vs Croatia – Sunday 16th November – Euro 2016 Qualifying

This is a top of the table clash with both sides on nine points each in Group H. Croatia are at the summit thanks to their 6-0 win over Azerbaijan but they will lose that privilege if they slip up here. Both teams were in exactly the same form before Croatia’s friendly with Argentina, with four wins and one loss in the five before that game. As expected, Italy have been keeping things tight and have only let in two goals since the World Cup. However, before the Argentina game, Croatia hadn’t conceded any in four matches. This is a tough one to call and a draw is likely. The last time they met was at Euro 2012 and that ended in a 1-1 stalemate. I think it’s a safe bet to go for the same scoreline this time.

Mr Predictor’s Verdict: Italy 1 vs Croatia 1 (Long List selection 3)
